Type II sets, from 1924-1962, are characterized by their 5/8” wide trussed look girders. Many specialized parts designed to build specific models were introduced from 1924-1932. The Great Depression put a damper on elaborate sets during the early to mid-1930s. By the late 1930s, sets were on the increase in size again. Very few metal sets were produced during World War II, most likely sets put together from leftover parts. After WWII, sets started small again, but gradually increased starting in 1948 with the introduction of the No. 12 1/2 Walking Giant set. Sets and models remained mostly unchanged until 1958 when Musical Sets hit the scene for this year and 1959. The end of the toy was in site as the quality of the sets started to deteriorate until the final demise in 1962.
The TYPE II sets are separated into three galleries by era.
TYPE I – 1913-1923 | TYPE II – Classic Period – 1924-1932 | TYPE II – Pre-WWII – 1933-1942 | TYPE II – Post-WWII – 1945-1962 | TYPE III – 1963-1988
Type II – Classic Period – 1924-1932
Photos appear in chronological order starting with 1924 No. 0 and ending with 1932 No. 10. There are 106 photos in this collection.
Thank you everybody who contributed to the Gallery. How did the items like Flanged Wheel (Z), Pierced Disk (BT), 12/18 Tooth Gear (P49) hold fast to the box insert. Example 1924 and 1925 No. 7 sets. From the photos it looks like it was not utilizing T-Clips rather their bushing or axle sleeve extends through the insert to the backside.
The inserts had a “keyhole” punched in them; a bit over a 5/16″ diameter hole for the hub to fit through and a ~5/32″ diameter hole halfway on the edge of the 5/16″ hole. The 5/32″ diameter hole was for the set screw to pass through the insert. Parts were pushed through the insert with the set screw aligned with the small half-hole, then the part was turned so the set screw was under the insert retaining the part.
Bruce,
I am not sure if this is the appropriate place to mention this, and if not, my apologies.
Looking through all of the set inventories, the S62 is described as a 7/8″ screw, and the S57 is described as a 1 3/8″ screw, however in the parts guide, page 11 the descriptions are reversed. Which is correct?
To correct my previous question, the descriptions in the manuals do not match the descriptions in the parts guide. The inventory lists, however, do agree with the manual.
