    I’m a new member in search of information about Erector Sets and American Flyer Trains.
    Now in retirement I’m preparing to play with all toys that I’ve collected, with my great grandson soon. He will be 3 in June. I started collecting toys that I had as young child, when his mother was 4 years old.
    I would like to be able to tell difference between the zinc, Cadmium, and Nickel plating?
    I have found the Erector Set Parts Guide, Bruce Hansen, most helpful information for identifying my sets. This document is where I learned of different plating.
    I any trying to sort and count the parts of several partial sets I purchased about 20 years ago. From a book I purchased durning same period; I discovered that I received a 50 year anniversary set from Sears for Christmas when I was very young. In turning 67 in a few weeks.

    Welcome Keith to the Society! I am the current ACGHS newsletter editor and also retired sharing my passion for all things Gilbert with my Son and my Granddaughter (She loves to build things).

    Regarding telling the difference between Zinc, Cadmium and Nickel parts. Not very scientific but I can usually tell by the color, feel and yes, smell of them. For example, I’ve notice Nickel parts tend to have a yellow cast to them. However, I will see if I can find a more scientific process for determining that.

    Seems to me this topic would be great for a newsletter article. 

    The 50th Anniversary Special set from Sears was produced in 1959. I have 2 of them in my collection as they are one of my favorites. (It’s been said I say that about all my sets.)
